When will my Clubcard vouchers expire and where can I use them? (2024)

I shop fairly regularly at my local Tesco and signed up for a Clubcard to take advantage of the member prices on certain items.

I didn't really think much about collecting a significant amount of points, because I tend to do my bigger shops at Aldi or Lidl.

But I've managed to build up enough Clubcard points to be eligible for about £50 worth of vouchers, which I haven't touched.

This week I was told by a friend that the vouchers will run out and I need to spend them before the end of the week. Is this true?

Is there anything else I can use the points for other than a food shop? I tend to buy from cheaper supermarkets and I don't want to spend more on food just because of these vouchers.

Every little helps: Clubcard points can be converted into vouchers to be spent on food or with Tesco's partners, but these have an expiry date

Angharad Carrick of This Is Money says: I sympathise with having an unmanageable wallet thanks to the ever-growing number of loyalty cards we all seem to need to do our food shop.

Supermarkets and other retailers have now introduced loyalty prices - essentially two-tier pricing for members and non-members.

Customers without a loyalty card, or who are uncomfortable with sharing their data, will likely have to spend more at the checkout.

Privacy and logistical concerns aside, it can be quite difficult to keep up with just how many retailers we have loyalty cards for, as well as how many points each card holds.

I'm therefore not surprised that you've managed to accumulate so many Clubcard points without realising.

If you're used to spending in another supermarket, then you probably aren't that familiar with how Clubcard points work.

Each supermarket has different rules about how much customers need to spend to receive a point, and how many points qualify for a voucher.

Clubcard members will receive a point for every £1 spent at Tesco, and 100 Clubcard points are worth £1.

So if you have 1,000 Clubcard points then that's worth £10, while 5,000 points are equal to £50, and so on.

You will also receive a point for every 2 litres of Tesco fuel you buy and for every £1 spent with Tesco mobile. If you have a Tesco credit card, you will need to spend £4 to earn one point.

The retailer has also introduced other partners, like Vauxhall, meaning that you could receive 50,000 points - worth £500 - if you buy a new Vauxhall car.

You cannot spend your points until they have been converted into vouchers, and to do this you need a minimum of 150 points, equivalent to £1.50.

Points can also only be swapped in multiples of 50.

You will receive these vouchers with your Clubcard statement every three months in February, May, August and November.

Clubcard vouchers are valid for two years, which is why Tesco often issues warnings to its customers ahead of the quarterly statements.

Currently, around £14million worth of vouchers are due to run out by 31 August, which is why your friend warned you about yours potentially expiring.

However, unless you have been sitting on your points for two years, you should have some time left to spend them.

If you're unsure, you can check the date on the voucher itself. Otherwise, you can check on the Clubcard website or app.

What can you spend Clubcard vouchers on?

You say that you are not a very regular Tesco shopper, and I understand why you might not want to use your vouchers for your groceries if you usually prefer to buy them elsewhere.

Thankfully, there are other ways you can spend your saved points.

Your points could be worth more if you swap them for reward vouchers with other retailers. Points are now doubled when swapped with Tesco's reward partners, so the 1,000 points usually worth £10 to spend at Tesco are worth £20 elsewhere.

Tesco has more than 100 partners, including:

  • Bella Italia
  • Best Western Hotels
  • Cineworld
  • Disney+
  • English Heritage
  • Hotels.com
  • Hoseasons
  • Hungry Horse
  • Legoland Windsor
  • Pizza Express
  • P&O Ferries
  • RAC
  • Railcard
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

As an example, you can swap £12 worth of points for a three-month standard Disney+ subscription or £7.50 worth for a subscription with ads. Both new and existing customers are eligible.

There are also plenty of options for days out, cinema and theatre tickets, as well as travel.

If you regularly travel by train and have been eyeing a railcard, which can cut costs by up to a third, you can use your vouchers to contribute towards the cost.

You can use £1.50 worth of your Clubcard vouchers to get £3 credit towards your railcard, which costs around £30, but it excludes the 26-30 card.

You could also use them towards flights and accommodation for your travels. Clubcard vouchers worth £5 are doubled to £10 to use with Hotels.com and Butlins.

Finally, you could choose to donate them to charities like Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation.
