History of Zaragoza Airport

Current Zaragoza Airport was established from the former airfields of Sanjurjo and Valenzuela, which were constructed during the civil war next to the municipality of Garrapinillos. The airports served as both civilian and military air stations beginning in 1940.

It wasn't until 1947 that Sanjurjo Airport officially welcomed civilian flights. The following year saw the start of a terminal's construction, culminating in its opening in 1950. The runway and field limits are lit at night, with a radio beacon, a windsock, and strong winds.

Valenzuela Airport became available to international traffic and customs with field limit lights and a landing center line installed in 1948. The expansion of the runway commenced the next year. In 1951, Aviaco re-established commercial flights between Madrid and Zaragoza and between Bilbao and Barcelona.

The Valenzuela air station was selected as one of several to be built and used jointly by the Spanish and American militaries as part of an agreement reached in 1953. Immediate action was taken to enhance the facilities. A new 3,718-meter runway was constructed, located 700 meters from the original 2,600-meter runway, as well as adjacent taxiways, aircraft parking, and buildings.

The antiaircraft cannons were placed to the south. At the same time, the Valenzuela air station facilities were relocated to the north of the runway. Formerly named Sanjurjo Airport, the airport was renamed Zaragoza Airport after the city of Zaragoza in Spain four years after being designated as a customs airport accessible to international traffic and a military base open to civil traffic in 1961.

Because the airport now serves as a freight distribution hub, more space has been set aside for cargo operations. Aena has constructed a new passenger terminal with a contemporary design of waves and skylights that produce tremendous luminosity in the passenger area to update and adapt the airport to the 2008 International Exhibition, held in the regional capital.
