Highlights

  • Open-world games like Valheim offer natural exploration with randomly generated worlds and blank maps.
  • Unique experiences, not just rare loot, are rewards for exploring in games like Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • In Elden Ring, exploration is organic and guided by map fragments, rewarding players with surprises at every turn.

Open-world games are among the most popular, allowing players to roam freely at their own pace and choose their own adventure. However, sometimes when even the biggest open-world maps are littered with place markers, exploring can feel forced, as though players are systematically ticking off a list of objectives.

11 Open-World Games With Dense Maps

The following open-world games have content packed into pretty dense maps.

These games, however, comprise open worlds that got free roaming just right, where exploration feels natural and rewarding for the players. One way this has been done is by having a blank mini-map, but the physical world itself has to be fleshed out with unique adventures and rewards potentially waiting around every corner. These are the best open-world games with the most rewarding exploration.

Updated August 12, 2024 by Joe Grantham: There is no shortage of games with rewarding exploration, and as developers have seen the success of such worlds, even more titles over recent years have trended towards prioritizing this element of gameplay.

While some games rely on procedural generation to guarantee that players can explore truly unique environments, others have perfected level design in a way that players are encouraged to always seek alternate paths and hidden caves, that more often than not are out there somewhere.

Rewards in video games don't always have to be rare loot, they can instead be unique experiences that are arguably more valuable. It is these kinds of rewards that are offered for exploring in Red Dead Redemption 2. For example, there are dozens of unique NPCs in every town, along the road, or in isolated cabins in the woods. Each of these could have a funny interaction, a tragic backstory, or a quest line of their own.

The best NPCs in RDR2 are highly memorable and make the world feel even more alive, but they aren't the only reason to wander off the beaten track or explore every building. Players will also stumble upon interesting actions with animals, such as a drowning deer that can be saved with a lasso. They could even explore the mountains to try and find Bigfoot. Lastly, the game also has plenty of materialistic rewards for scouring every nook and cranny, from rare gear to curious tokens and much more.

Exploration is one of the core tenets of Terraria, and thanks to randomly generated worlds, players never know what they will discover when they start digging down. From monsters and jungle caves to treasures and crafting materials, there could be anything lurking on the other side of a tunnel. Despite the risks, players are rewarded more often than not for their curiosity.

Furthermore, with its 2D sidescroller view and pixel art graphics, Terraria is vastly different from typical open-world games, a fact that has many advantages. For example, it is a great option for those looking to explore open-world games on a low-end PC or laptop, and the game's cozy aesthetics make it perfect for a relaxing gaming session.

Out of the open-world games with the best exploration, The Witness is easily the least known. Ironically, this makes it a more rewarding experience for those few lucky souls to stumble upon it. The premise of the game is simple; players wake up on a vibrant unknown island with no memories. To rediscover themselves and eventually find their way home, players must explore to find clues and solve puzzles.

With over 500 puzzles available, almost anything of note is likely key to at least one conundrum. With no guide or instructions, the only thing players can do is explore and enjoy each new puzzle that is presented to them.

If there's one game with practically infinite exploration, it has to be No Man's Sky, an open-world survival and sandbox game iconic for boasting 18 quintillion unique planets. Thanks to procedural generation, each planet is completely different in many ways, including size, weather, fauna, flora, resources, and much more. When players visit a planet or even a solar system in their starship, they will likely be the first and only player to ever reach it, and each discovery down to the smallest plant can be documented and uploaded for currency.

One of the most rewarding aspects of exploration in No Man's Sky is heading toward a planet in search of a particular resource and then discovering something completely unexpected. For example, players might blast a large hole in the ground trying to find a Uranium deposit, only to go so deep that they accidentally stumble on an underground cave system full of life.

With limited fast travel and no mounts, Dragon's Dogma 2 is all about exploring naturally on foot, and players are encouraged to venture off the beaten path to find all sorts of missable content. By finding ways up every cliff and using creative ways to cross ravines, players can find a plethora of hidden locations, and the unique boss fights that players would otherwise miss out on are well worth the effort.

Another feature of exploration in Dragon's Dogma 2 is that Pawns can point the player in the direction of treasures they found on their travels with other Arisen. This also means that when players discover something rare, they can take pride in the knowledge that when they send their own Pawn out on adventures, they will be helping others.

Subnautica is one of the few open-world games to take place underwater, which instantly makes the exploration unique and fresh for new players. Having crashed on an alien planet, players must try and survive in the eerie depths while managing their oxygen levels and avoiding Subnautica's scariest creatures.

Unlike other games on this list, players will want to plan out their explorations a little more, as things can get quite dangerous. However, successful explorers will feel extremely satisfied with the secrets they find lurking below. One of the best rewards for exploring is the knowledge that players accumulate naturally and then can apply to other dives.

Valheim is by nature a game all about exploration and the fact that the world is randomly generated at the start means that even veteran players can enjoy playing on new map seeds. When players are dropped into Midgard, they will have a completely blank map that can only be revealed by running or sailing around, or by building a Cartography Table which allows players to share their own map explorations with friends.

Sometimes, leaving things unsaid can have a more powerful effect, as these video games prove.

Other than the lack of map markers, apart from those which players set themselves, the main thing that makes exploration rewarding is finding the various biomes within Valheim that each presents their own challenges and subsequent rewards. There is nothing like setting sail with friends and stumbling upon the perfect location for a base with all the important biomes of sufficient size nearby. Similarly, each new resource players find will open up new crafting options, and playing blind makes this exploration even more rewarding. The game's charming art style also helps make exploration feel great in Valheim.

Outer Wilds is a lighthearted open-world game that players should try and head into blind, as exploring naturally and discovering all the game's secrets is a reward in and of itself. Players will find themselves in a strange and ever-changing solar system that is trapped in a seemingly endless time loop. The worlds and their physics are nothing like those that are familiar with and solving the mysteries requires players to think outside the box.

The exploration and wonder at the unknown is so good in Outer Wilds that many players wish they could erase their memory and start all over again. The game is incredibly thought-provoking and has an ethereal beauty about it.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is widely considered to be a masterpiece in game design, and it set the standard for how natural exploration should work in open-world games. The exploration is so good in Breath of the Wild that it is one of the open-world games that can switch any brain off while playing.

Other than the beauty of Hyrule, which is filled with plateaus and interesting mountains to scale, the rewards of exploring in Breath of the Wild are the joy of being able to do whatever players want and stumbling upon the rewards when least expected. Many players would even argue that getting lost in the mountains was one of their best experiences with the game.

Game of the Year winner Elden Ring is without a doubt the epitome of natural and rewarding exploration. It achieves this in many ways which work together to create one of the best experiences in gaming. First, the map in Elden Ring is hidden until players find map fragments. However, even with these, players will not get markers for anything until they find it. Despite the lack of map markers or general objectives, players looking to get back on course can be guided by the Golden Path which follows a series of Sites of Grace in the direction of the main bosses. This helps exploration strike a healthy balance.

Another way in which Elden Ring exploration feels rewarding is how, just by seeing that there is some glowing loot up above, players know there must be a way up, even if they currently have no idea. However, Elden Ring's greatest asset when it comes to exploration is the way in which the world is laid out, with surprises lurking everywhere, even if they aren't noticed from certain angles. Elden Ring also manages to avoid instilling a fear of missing out in players, as there is just too much and players can always return in New Game+.
